The records cannot be compared directly, since boat types and groups have very different times. Strength is therefore computed in two steps: (1) each record is measured as the percentage faster than the average for its boat type; (2) each group’s average strength (the intermediate step below) is subtracted, putting the groups on an equal footing. The adjusted strength shows how much each individual record overperforms relative to both its boat type and its group — making it possible to rank all 36 records.
